Case study · Landscaping, planting & decking
Clyde Road
Burnside, Christchurch · Residential
A sharp, white-gabled home given grounds to match — magnolia screening and layered planting, a warm hardwood deck stepping down to a board-formed concrete planter, and fresh lawn and paths wrapping the section.
The brief
Planting, deck and lawn as one.
Clyde Road is a crisp, white-gabled architectural home, and the owners wanted grounds with the same clean, considered feel — private, green and low-maintenance. We handled the whole section, from the planting and lawn to the deck and paths, so everything was designed to work together rather than added piece by piece.
Screening was the priority. A run of magnolias planted along the boundary gives the section privacy that only gets better as they grow, underplanted with layered shrubs and hydrangeas in crisp, mulched beds with timber edging. The planting softens the dark boundary fence and frames the lawn without any fuss.
Off the living areas, a warm hardwood deck steps down to the lawn, with a board-formed concrete planter — a red Japanese maple as its centrepiece — bringing structure and a bit of colour right up to the house. Exposed-aggregate paths run down the sides and tie the front and back of the section together.
Fresh lawn finishes it off — a clean, green foil to the white house and dark fence, and a soft, usable space for the family. The result is a tidy, private garden that suits the architecture and won't demand every weekend to keep looking sharp.
